An E85 Breifing

A Briefing on E85

-E85 is an Ethanol fuel blend containing up to 85% Ethanol and 15% Gasoline. In most cases at the pump currently, your gasoline has only 10% Ethanol.

-E85 is primary produced using renewable products such as corn and grain. One bushel of corn can yield roughly 2.5 gallons of fuel Ethanol.

-E85 burns cleaner than regular gasoline because of the high oxygen content and is less chemically complex than gasoline. It can reduce benzene and hydrocarbon emissions.

-E85 is biodegradable, non-toxic, and water soluble and contains about 80% less of the contaminants found in gasoline.

-Ethanol can be ingested (like moonshine) by humans so it is denatured with gasoline or another bitter agent to help prevent ingestion.

-The octane rating of E85 is between 100 and 105 compared to regular gasoline rating of between 87 and 93.

-Fuel Mileage is roughly 25% less when using E85 over gasoline because it has less energy content. To make E85 a viable alternative, the cost per gallon must be more than 25% less than gasoline.

-The primary difference of a vehicle equipped to run on E85 is the elimination of bare aluminum, rubber and magnesium parts in the fuel system. Other differences include fuel delivery lines coated with plastic as well as other wear-resistant components.

-Vehicles equipped to run on Ethanol are also known as FFV’s. (Flexible Fuel Vehicles)
